When we decided to import a new male from the USA to expand our genepool, I contacted Bryna Comsky (Ha'Aretz Canaan Dogs), from whom I got my first and four-time specialty Best In Show winning Canaan, CCA Ch Ariel Shin Ha'Aretz of Briel (Briel was my kennel name in the USA). Bryna was breeding two of her bitches, Starli and Remmi, and I was delighted when I found out that the breeding of Remmi would, on the sire's side, go back to my beloved Ariel. There were only two puppies in the litter -- a boy, Hayyim, and his sister, Maya. Both were gorgeous puppies and I would have loved to have both, but I chose Hayyim when he was just 4 weeks old.
Hayyim's show debut was when he was 7-months old at the Canaan Dog Club of America's National Specialty, where he took Reserve Winner's Dog under judge, Pat Hastings and Best of Opposite Sex in Puppy Sweeps under Carol O'Bryan. The same weekend at two other championship shows, Hayyim was Winners Dog under June Penta and Lee Canalizo, each time for a 4-point major. He went on to finish his American championship by the time he was 11-months old.
Hayyim should have been with us as soon as his Pet Passport was in order, but due to a mix-up in the timing of the blood test needed, the whole procedure for the Pet Passport had to be started over again. While we were waiting, Bryna asked if she could use Hayyim for a mating to one of her bitches. We said yes, and the mating resulted in 2 lovely puppies. So Hayyim finally came to us on the 25th March 2009, a proven sire. In addition, Bryna had his eyes checked and certified by CERF as 'normal'; his hips scored and certified OFA-GOOD; and he was also DNA tested for degenerative myelopathy (DM) and he came back 'normal' - not affected and not a carrier. This test is new and is only available in the USA through the OFA. Hayyim is the only dog in the UK DM-free certified. But just as importantly, Hayyim is a very loveable dog -- sweet and affectionate, playfull and silly, as well as handsome and typey.
We have not shown Hayyim that much, but at the Canaan Dog Club of the United Kingdom's Open Show in April , Israeli judge, Avi Marshak wrote the following critique on Hayyim: "A little bit long in body. Very elegant. Typical head, correct eyes, bite & ears. Elegant neck, short back, medium angulations, straight front legs, correct coat colour & movement." We were very pleased with this critique as Hayyim was still a very young dog at the time and needed fill out. At the 2011 Club Show a more mature Hayyim was Reserve Best In Show!
Hayyim was bred to our Anacan Glory Bea and the breeding produced a litter of six gorgeous puppies on the 26th November 2009. Despite my intentions to not keep one, when Richard said of our Izzy (Anacan Issachar), "you can keep him if you like", I wasn't going to say no. So far the feedback from all the puppy buyers has been great. Hayyim's sons and daughters are very like him in character -- playful (they love their toys) and people-orientated. A breeding to our Anacan Sheeza Gem was again a great success producing 5 girls and 1 boy. We have kept two of the girls - a red named Anacan Happy Anni and a black, like dad, called Anacan Silhouette - because we couldn't really decide betwee them. Another breeding to our Swedish import, Chancos Charmani At Anacan, produced 4 gorgeous pups - 2 boys and 2 girls, that are full of promise. We are so pleased to have Hayyim here.
